And
dress, wearing (extended garment of) felt, keeping parted from the creatures
of God, following the Tareeq
(way) of Silence, growing goods habits and even
the virtuous character are against Nafs. Does the Nafs die by
these things? I would say "No!" [Likewise,] recluse, Chilla
, travelling and
refraining from the pleasures of all things also go in opposition of
the Nafs. Does Nafs die by these? I would say "No!" In addition, education
and learning, teaching and instruction and becoming numinous (Ba-Khuda) are
in opposition of the Nafs. Does the Nafs die by these? I will
say again "No!" BAYT e BAHU
(Couplet of Bahu
Rahmatu-Allahe
Ta-aala Alaihe) If, the Nafs sits on throne as Sultan, The dog of greed (and grasping) even then walks
around him.
Hence,
what should be done is this that (he) should confine it by house arrest after trampling
over its kingdom should always keep waging Muhaasba against it. When
the Nafs will stay hungry (and unsatisfied), it will become short
of the power and energy to do Obedience (and servitude) and will not be
able to do worship. On the other hand, if the Nafs becomes full
(and satisfied) it will stuff itself with sensual desires and will
become seditions (and rebellious). Thus! What treatment should be given
to it? Its treatment should be given on this principle, which Allah
Almighty has told us: Allah
tasks not a soul beyond its scope (2:286)
Moreover,
that Nafs that feels peace by hunger and gets taste
through Zikr and Obedience, it should observe righteousness
and do the Worship. That Nafs, which does not get taste in Zikr
and Obedience in a state of hunger [and] instead takes fury,
Waswaas and Nifaaq (Discord) and Kufr , should eat more. However,
the condition is this that the Nafs should be full but the signs
of vices should not become prominent and should have inclination unto Obedience
and worship in rest (and peace). Otherwise, it should remain semi-satisfied
and in half-fed with the necessities of the life of Nafs.
